Discover North East Derbyshire’s Hidden Gems

Protestors who changed the national landscape, wartime tragedies and icons of the industrial age - these are just some of stories being uncovered as part of the Hidden Gems project.

The history and heritage of the district is being brought to life in a series of 16 audio trails being produced by North East Derbyshire District Council, thanks to £50,000 worth of funding from the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire (BNED) LEADER Approach.

This project follows these fascinating stories and allows residents to make new discoveries on their doorstep while pulling visitors into our towns and villages.

The trails are brought to life thanks to narration by, and interviews with, local people – guiding listeners along the trail.

The Second World War bombing of Tupton in which 11 people died, and the little-known story of GHB Ward – a Holmesfield resident known as the 'King of the Ramblers' – are the first two trails which launched early in 2011.

They are available to download for free on to an mp3 player, mobile phone or iPhone.

The series of 16 will be produced over two years, and will also include the history of Wingerworth, the story of Ashover Light Railway, George Stephenson’s Clay Cross, a wildlife walk through North Wingfield and many more.

The project builds on the success of two audio trails which have already been produced by the council for Ashover and Holmewood – available to download through the links on the right.

The audio trails are produced by local, Higham-based company Audiotrails.
