GHB Ward Audio Trail (Holmesfield)

Holmesfield Audio Trail
The audio guide tells the largely forgotten story of G.H.B. Ward (1876-1957), sometimes called "the King of the Ramblers".

His life is introduced by the information board at the start of the walk, and the route passes his former home and continues onto the moors which he loved and knew intimately.

GHB Ward was a passionate lifelong campaigner for the right of free public access to open countryside and moorland for rambling and recreation, and was an inspirational figure, leading his rambling club, and organising the local and National groups which today form the Ramblers Association.

This walk follows an existing route established by local ramblers in commemoration of his work, and takes in North East Derbyshire's section of the Peak District National Park.

The 10 mile route takes around six hours to complete, following footpaths and trails across moorland, with some uphill sections. Please note the additional information given on the map and description pages.  You are advised to take sufficient refreshment, although approximately half way along the route, facilities may be found at Fox House and the National Trust Longshaw Centre. (Please check up to date details and opening times before relying on these.)

The audio trail can be quickly downloaded onto an MP3 player, iPod or mobile phone.

The map and directions are available below, along with a guide to downloading the audio trail.

You can download a zip folder containing all the tracks in one go, a complete podcast or download and listen to the individual tracks, you choose!

The trail has been produced by Higham-based company 'Audio Trails' – using Ward's own writings and other local information.
